Jul 11: Indonesia, Sulawesi | Operation World

Filed under: christian — dannywahlquist @ 5:55 am

The fledgling democratic government faces a daunting task. Its first years were marked by powerlessness in the face of extremist demands from strident Islamists and manipulation by the powerful former regime and military. Positive signs see moderation and democracy taking root and displacing the old culture of extremism, corruption, cronyism and nepotism. There is a long way to go, however, to see political, economic and social renewal. Pray that the president, vice-president and the People’s Consultative Assembly may be courageous, decisive and fair in bringing betterment to the whole nation.

Challenge for Prayer

Less-reached peoples are many, but there are small Christian minorities in most of the larger groups. Pray specifically for:

a) The Bugis (5m) and related Makassar (2.1m) of South Sulawesi, with colonies all around the coast. Trading is their major occupation. By Indonesian standards, Islam is more orthodox among them. There are a few thousand Christians among these groups, the Makassar being one of the few significant orthodox Muslim groups responding in any numbers to the gospel.

b) The Muslim Gorontalo (more than 1m), a cluster of five Muslim-animist peoples scattered around the north, and the Bungku-Bajau cluster in the southeast. There are some small churches indigenous to these peoples, but response is slow and many areas remain untouched.

Pray Today – July 10: Kalimantan, Indonesia | Operation World

Filed under: christian — dannywahlquist @ 5:52 am

Indonesia’s vast diversity is both its strength and its peril. With 17,500 islands strewn across nearly 10 million sq km of ocean, 33 provinces, 722 languages, even more ethnic groups, myriad religious expressions and deeply divided political agendas, holding this nation together is a monumental task. Pray for political strength for the maturing democracy to stay balanced between national unity and regional identity. Pray also for the government to act with righteousness in honouring all peoples and communities; Indonesia’s history, especially recently, is characterized by discrimination, exploitation and favouritism.

Leadership training is a definite need as the Church grows, but illiteracy, poverty, geographic isolation and lack of indigenous Scriptures have all slowed development. There are a number of Bible schools. Pray for churches to mature and have a vision for outreach; pray also for expressions of Christian faith to be culturally resonant and appropriate.

Pray Today – July 9: East Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara Timor), Indonesia | Operation World

Filed under: christian — dannywahlquist @ 8:30 pm

Sumba, an island long known for its animism and resistance to the gospel, saw a movement of the Spirit in the late 1980s, with Protestants doubling from 75,000 to 160,000 in five years. Pray that this movement may impact all seven language groups on the island; nearly one-third are still animists while many Christians, both Reformed and Catholic, are nominal.

The Commitment of the Christian Life | Challies Dot Com

“As believers we need to be careful that we do not make a similar mistake. We can be committed to a set of Christian values or to a lifestyle of discipleship without being committed to God Himself. But Paul said, offer yourself to God, and in doing that commit yourselves to the pursuit of holiness in order to please Him.”

Concerning the offender who submits to church authorities, the Apostle Paul wrote, “ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow”. “….confirm your love toward him”…… “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us”. 2 Corinthians 2:7-11

The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards – Desiring God

Filed under: christian — dannywahlquist @ 7:20 am

Do I constantly depend on the Holy Spirit, or my disciplines?

“Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ’s sake.”
